Darcy, Briana

Briana Darcy I was put here to save Sharks…
I was born on October 22, 1996 in White Plains NY. I currently reside in Westchester County.
My interest in diving started at the age of 4. At the age of 5, I participated in the PADI Bubble Makers Program. At the age of 8, I participated in the PADI Seal Program and then advanced to the PADI Seals Master Certification. At the age of 10, I received my PADI Junior Open Water Certification in Marathon Key, Florida. At the age of 12, I received my Junior Advanced Open Water Certification. That same year, I also received my Jr. Nightdiver Certification, Jr. Digital UW Photographer, and Jr. Diver Propulsion Vehicle and I also received my Emergency First Response Certification. At the age of 13, I became a Jr. Rescue Diver, and my biggest achievement yet, I achieved my Jr. Master Scuba Diver rating. I also just achieved my Dry Suit Certification.
I am an associate member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame and also the recipient of the 2011 Women Divers Hall of Fame/ Ocean Pals Scholarship.
I love to teach my friends about shark conservation and about saving the sharks. I also love underwater photography, I hope with my photos, I can show the world how precious the worlds oceans are.

Venoutsos, Peter

His experience includes working with private underwater engineering firms, the Federal Government and the US Navy. He is an active member of the Connecticut Underwater Archeology Committee and his interests include underwater photography, shipwrecks & cave diving. He is the founder of American Scuba Adventures a underwater video company with the goal of promoting diving in the United States and around the world.

Hyman, Richard E.

 First time author of FROGMEN, Richard Hyman worked for Jacques Cousteau from 1973 to 1979. Raised in Weston, Connecticut, he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and business administration from Furman University of South Carolina, where he wrote a weekly environmental column for the school newspaper. During summer jobs, including an internship at NASA, he also attended Yale, Georgetown, and Fairfield Universities, where he studied environmental engineering, non-fiction writing, and business. His career has been in business, primarily in the telecommunications, technology, and software industries.

Hunt, Peter

Peter Hunt crewed on five Andrea Doria expeditions in the early 1980s before hanging up his deep sea fins to become a Navy pilot. A critically acclaimed writer (Angles of Attack, Ballantine 2002), and former airline pilot, Hunt holds a history degree from Brown and a University of Washington Masters.

Collister, Jenny

Jenny has worked in the travel industry for 26 years. She received a degree in travel and tourism in 1986. Her interest in diving began in the frigid Canadian waters. Jenny is President and owner of Reef & Rainforest and was elected to the DEMA Board of Directors in 2012

Lewis, Steve

Steve Lewis has been an active technical diver, instructor and expedition leader since the early 1990s when diving was an antidote to a career in marketing and brand management. In 2002 he retired from the corporate world and became a dive bum full-time, and is currently a training, and product consultant for a major rebreather manufacturer and design consultant for a leading open-circuit dive equipment company. As a speaker, educator, and blogger, he is best known for promoting safe diving practices to technical divers using both open and closed-circuit kit, in caves, on wrecks and in open water environments.

Takakjian, Captain Eric

Captain Eric Takakjian a professional mariner has been sailing ships and oceangoing tugboats to various corners of the world since 1978. Presently Captain Takakjian is employed aboard an ocean going tugboat based in New York Harbor. He and his wife Lori also own and operate the research vessel QUEST conducting oceanographic and shipwreck research in the North East United States and outer continental shelf waters.

Captain Eric has conducted extensive historical research on New England shipwrecks. Since 1985 captain Eric and his team have conducted expeditions resulting in the location and exploration over 70 previously undiscovered shipwrecks in the waters around New England and outer continental shelf waters. A diver since 1972 and an avid shipwreck diver since 1975. Captain Eric has been a fellow of the Explorers Club since 1997, a member of the Steamship Historical Society , and is an associate member of the Boston Sea Rovers.

Mazraani, Joe

Lobel, Phillip

Phillip Lobel, PhD is a Professor of Biology at Boston University. He is an Ichthyologist and has worked on wild fishes worldwide. He also serves as the Scientific Diving Officer for Boston University and is active in the American Academy of Underwater Sciences. Phil is both a NAUI (#41363) and a DAN (#13032) instructor. He was awarded the SSI Platinum Pro award in 2010 for having logged more than 7500 dives. In 2011, Phil was honored with the NOGI award for science.

Bright, Robyn

Robyn Bright has been teaching beginner and intermediate photography, introductory Photoshop and running photography workshops since 2003. She has spoken and contributed to workshops at the NECCC and local camera clubs. Her photos have been shown in many local galleries and published in pet industry magazines, advertisements and on product labels. She has studied with DeCordova Museum and with top photographers across the US, and has been mentored by Adam Jones, a distinguished member of Canon’s Explorer of Light. Robyn loves to take photos both locally in her native New England area as well as all over the world including Australia, China, Europe, Central and South America and Africa including Kenya and Egypt. Underwater photography is a specialty and a passion for Robyn as it puts together her love of scuba diving and undersea life with photography, plus she enjoys the numerous challenges of taking pictures under the water. She has taken underwater photographs in the Galapagos, the Caribbean Islands of Tobago, Roatan, Bonaire and Cayman Brac, Indonesia including Lembeh, Bunaken and  Wakatobi, and the Red Sea.

Smith, Chad

Professional Diver and US Merchant Marine Officer, Chad coordinates research cruises for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution aboard the R/V Knorr as well as being a leading member of the WHOI Scientific Diving Program.  A graduate of Massachusetts Maritime Academy and former Oil Tanker Officer, Chad was drafted as the US Government’s Vessel Operations Chief on the BP Gulf Oil Spill. Former assistant Divemaster at Bikini Atoll and NOAA certified Working Diver, Chad is an avid New England wreck diver and is certified in trimix, rebreathers and surface supplied commercial diving. In 2006 Chad was awarded the US Merchant Marine Expeditionary Medal in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Chad lives on Cape Cod with his Wife Victoria and their two rescue dogs.

Hunter, Ryan

Ryan Hunter is a long time diver in the New England area. He was selected as the 2007 Frank Scalli intern and has a passion for underwater robotics.  He is the co-founder and CEO of TR Aeronautics, an aerospace defense firm specializing in green energy systems and defense robotics. As a research engineer at the Boston University Intelligent Mechatronics Lab, Ryan develops hardware and software platforms for robotic systems operating in a wide range of environments.

Longobardi, Pam

Pam Longobardi has had over 40 solo exhibitions and 65 group exhibitions in galleries and museums in the US, China, Italy, Spain, Finland, Poland, Japan, Greece and Monaco. Her artworks are in numerous public and private collections. Longobardi is a Professor of Art at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia and created the Drifters Project in 2006, an ongoing environmental intervention involving photography and installations focusing on global ocean plastics pollution. She exhibited this work Beijing at NY ARTS/Beijing during the 2008 Olympics and at ARTLIFEfortheworld in Venice for the 2009 Venice Biennale ARTE VISIVI collateral exhibitions. Edizione Charta (Milan, NY) published a book on the project in 2010 titled Drifters: Plastics, Pollution and Personhood. Recent exhibitions include Voyages on an Uncanny Sea at Gallery Diet in Miami, and a commission of new work for Oceanomania at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, curated by Mark Dion, Sarina Basta and Cristiano Raimondi, and upcoming at Savvy Contemporary in Berlin in May 2012. VanderClock, Bill

Bill VanderClock, a Boston Sea Rover since 1990, is a full time faculty member at Bentley University in Computer Information Systems and has been a diving instructor for more than 25 years. He spent 5 years visiting the Middle East and playing ice hockey there.

Orr, Betty

Betty Orr is Vice President & Director of Insurance for DAN Services. She came to Divers Alert Network in 1991 as a customer services representative in the Membership Department and transferred into the Insurance Department in 1999. Prior to coming to DAN, she worked with the Florida Department of Regulation as an agent and Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio as an Associate Professor of Biology. Betty has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biology and has authored and contributed to many books and magazine articles in both scuba diving and biology.

McCafferty EMT-P DMT-A, Marty

Marty has been both a dive instructor and a paramedic since 1995. He has worked as a paramedic in the field, in an ER and as an EMS supervisor at an Ohio theme park. He also has experience training students with disabilities to dive. Additionally he was certified as an AHA BLS and First Aid instructor as well as an EMT instructor. He has been with DAN since 2004.

Marty’s passion is education. In 2006 he developed DAN’s Webinar program, where divers from around the world login to real-time lectures with DAN Medics on a variety of dive safety related topics. In 2007 Marty recorded DAN’s first dive safety DVD lecture, “I May Be Bent…Now What?”. Each year, Marty represents DAN at consumer and industry dive shows as well as professional level conferences, providing lectures, seminars and workshops on various topics related to diving medicine. Marty’s intention is to continue his own education and continue working to develop new educational opportunities for the diving public.

Hendrick, “Butch” Walt

Butch has been teaching diving since the 1960’s in all aspects from instructor training, public safety diving, rescue, and underwater movement. Butch, considered by many to be the father of diving rescue, introduced the do-si-do, in-water mouth to mouth, the rescue throw bag and many other procedures and equipment commonly used today. He has devoted his life to raising standards and keeping divers safe.

Wiseman, Clay

Clay Wiseman has a degree in fisheries biology and marine invertebrate zoology from the University of Washington in Seattle. After working in mariculture and then in commercial diving Clay went to work for the Aggressor Fleet of live-aboard dive boats as ship’s captain. He also served as photography and video pro for the duration. He has published his photography and writing in National Geographic, Time, International Wildlife, Ocean Realm, Skin Diver, Sport Diver, and Scuba Diving Magazines. Additionally, he co-authored the book Guide to Marine Life of the Caribbean, Bahamas and Florida with his friend and colleague Marty Snyderman.

Clay now works as a professional videographer and represents the Indonesian-based liveaboard “Pindito” which is the first liveaboard to explore and operate in Raja Ampat. He has over 10,000 dives to his credit and has been a NAUI instructor for more than 20 years.

Keating, Steven

Steven Keating is a graduate student in mechanical engineering at MIT who is invigorated by creativity, positivity and maple syrup. When he’s not in the machine shop or working on his 3D printing research, he can be found building crazy contraptions, scuba diving, or pulling practical jokes on his friends.

Fazah, Nick

Nick Fazah began his underwater career as a scuba instructor in the Florida Keys. He was first certified as a NAUI/SSI instructor in 2004 at Hall’s Dive Center, then made the move to teach in Boston, MA. During the first few years he worked with the very experienced people that East Coast Divers kept on staff and knew that Boston was going to be his new home.
“The challenge of different tactics that comes with hunting and the pushing of ones own personal limits was addictive. I am the kind of person who really likes to know what’s going on while I’m doing it. That’s really what got me thinking about furthering my education about Freediving.”
Since 2010 Nick has been teaching freediving to the general populous of New England and recently became SSI’s first Instructor Trainer for freediving in the US. He is also the proud new joint owner of East Coast Divers in Brookline, along side his long time friend and business partner Alex Dulavitz.

Bourbon, Holly Martel

HollyMBHolly Martel Bourbon is the Curator of Fishes/DSO for the National Aquarium in Baltimore since June of 2012. Bourbon and her Fishes team and Quarantine staff worked on the new Blacktip Reef exhibit animal component. Bourbon oversees a staff of 11 Fishes team members and the Fish and Invertebrate exhibits at the Aquarium as well as all the diving operations.

Prior to this Bourbon was the DSO/Biologist for the MA Division of Marine Fisheries based in New Bedford, MA for 7.5 years. She oversaw the diving operations of the Division and participated in New England based diving research.

From 1987-2005, Bourbon was a Senior Aquarist/DSO for the New England Aquarium in Boston, MA. Here she oversaw the daily operations of the Giant Ocean Tank, managed all aspects of the member sponsored collecting expeditions, and was a media spokesperson.
Bourbon is a member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame and an Associate Rover member. She is married to Bill Bourbon and they have a dog, Wally. The Bourbons are still relocating to Maryland and Bill has his business based in Plymouth, MA.

 

Michelson, Robert

Based in Braintree, MA Bob Michelson is a published underwater photographer and videographer who has been diving for 32 years.  He is a PADI Dive Master, a Specialty Instructor in Underwater Photography, Videography and Underwater Naturalist.  His photography and articles as well as his video footage have appeared in numerous regional and national magazines and have aired on numerous broadcast and cable networks.  Michelson provides educational workshops and seminars to organizations throughout the Northeast.

 

Whitcraft, Samantha

Samantha Whitcraft is Shark Savers’ Program Manager for citizen science. As a marine conservation biologist she has worked to protect the oceans’ animals in the field, lab and office. Researching biodiversity, endangered species, and sustainable fisheries has taken her to the Amazon with National Geographic, to Mesoamerican with NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program, and around the world to promote eco-tourism that emphasizes ocean advocacy and adventure. Magee, Erin

Erin Magee is a National Record Holding Freediver and one of Performance Freediving International’s head instructors. Since beginning to freedive in 2007 she’s broken the US Women’s National Record five times and currently holds the record with a dive to 80 meters/262 feet.

Amanda Cotton is the founder and principal photographer for A COTTON PHOTO Creative Works, a media and design company specializing in underwater photography.  ACP’s goal is to help the general public embrace the beauty below the waves; in hopes that with awareness comes concern for the planet’s fragile marine ecosystems.

 

Narwrocky, Pete

Pete Nawrocky began his diving career in 1971 in Long Island, NY. As a marine biology major in college, Pete became fascinated by the ocean and wanted to see for himself what he was studying. Since his High School days, Pete has spent his carreer diving, exploring and photographing a multitude  of environments
Pete joined Dive Rite in 1998 and is best known for his willingness to share his passion for diving with others.
An avid underwater photographer, Pete’s photos have graced the pages of many scuba magazines over the years and can often be found in Dive Rite’s own advertisements. Always the educator, Pete often uses his photography in his lecture presentations, which has taken him from Anchorage Alaska , Bonaire  the World Trade center as well as Industry Trade shows, local aquariums, high schools, etc.

Cooper, Dr. Richard A.

Dr. Cooper has over 50 years of experience in undersea research and education specializing with equipment such as SCUBA, research submersibles, ROVs, and underwater habitats. A veteran U.S. Navy Aquanaut and scientist, Dr. Cooper has worked in 5 ocean floor habitat programs involving saturation diving while logging more than 2,000 hours of bottom time with SCUBA. Together with Christopher G. Cooper and their 9-person board of directors, Dr. Cooper intends on using SeaBase1 to revitalize America’s “Man in the Sea Program” of the 1960s and 1970s into the next generation of underwater facilities for research, education, and eco-tourism.

Sean’s skill set is in production, but he enjoys capturing the beauty of our natural world from Gus’ point of view.

Sentman, Wayne

As Director of International Eco-tour Programs for the marine conservation non-profit, Oceanic Society, Wayne works to develop initiatives that combine species conservation research, transformational travel, and outreach, to support and motivate directed conservation actions from local communities. Since 2002 Wayne has been an instructor for undergraduate field programs in Kenya focused on human-wildlife conflict and the use of art and social media to interpret environmental problems to a global audience. In 2013 Wayne completed his Master’s degree at Harvard University Extension School in Sustainability and Environmental Management.

deNapoli, Dyan

Dyan deNapoli is the author of The Great Penguin Rescue, which chronicles the largest animal rescue ever undertaken. Formerly a Senior Penguin Aquarist at Boston’s New England Aquarium, Dyan has taught 250,000 people worldwide about penguins, and has appeared on numerous TV and radio shows, including CNN and BBC Radio.

Moniz, Rhonda

Rhonda Moniz is an ROV Pilot/Engineer, Diving Safety Officer, Film Maker and Journalist. She has also worked over the past twenty years, as a lead Science Diver and Diving Instructor. Ms. Moniz is CEO and Director of Operations for Benthic Exploration, a company specializing in marine technology including ROV, AUV, Side scan, and sub-bottom profiling technology. She has been involved in a number of expeditions around the globe including several as ROV Pilot and Engineer for Dr. Robert Ballard. Ms. Moniz has been named Explorer in Residence by the New Bedford Ocean Explorium.

She has served as the lead science diver and underwater cinematographer for the University of Massachusetts – Marine Science and Technology Campus, and the University of Rhode Island. She has worked as the underwater Director of Photography for the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Museum of Natural History in New Mexico and has acted as Science Advisor for the underwater-segment for “Evolution” an eight hour PBS series for NOVA. She has also worked on several Discovery Channel productions.

Ms. Moniz is a full member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences, Divers Alert Network and, the Boston Sea Rovers.

Weaver, Christopher

Michael Salvarezza and Christopher Weaver have been diving the waters of the world since 1978. In that time, they have spent hundreds of hours underwater and have accumulated a large and varied library of photographic images. They have presented their work in many multi-media slide presentations, and have appeared previously at Beneath the Sea, the Boston Sea Rovers Underwater Clinic, Our World Underwater and the Long Island Divers Association Film Festival. Mike and Chris have been published in numerous magazines, including National Geographic Adventure, and have authored many articles for the majority of the dive publications the world over. Their work has also been used to support a number of research and educational programs, including the Jason Project for Education, the Atlantis Marine World Aquarium in New York and the Cambridge University and the University of Groningen Arctic Centre work on monitoring the transformation of historic features in Antarctica and Svalbard.

Robinson, Blades

Blades Robinson began his Public Safety Diving career in 1980 and presently serves on the Board of Directors for Dive Rescue International and is the Executive Director of the International Association of Dive Rescue Specialists, a non-profit organization dedicated to Public Safety Diving safety and reducing line of duty deaths.

Orr, Dan

Recently retired from the position of President of Divers Alert Network (DAN) and Chairman of the Board of International DAN, he has helped DAN focus on its worldwide diving safety mission. Dan is also currently Chairman of the Board of the Historical Diving Society (HDS-USA). Prior to coming to DAN, he worked and taught recreational diving in a retail store, developed and implemented course curricula in the academic environment, collected data and supervised research efforts in the field of science diving, tested diving equipment for military contractors and worked for or served on the Boards of various not-for-profit organizations during his career.

He has published and co-authored over 100 articles and a dozen books and manuals including: Scuba Diving Safety, Pocket Guide to First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries; Pocket Guide for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries; and the DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries Training Manual

He has also been honored by his peers by being the recipient of many prestigious awards and honors including the NOGI Award in Sports/Education, the Leonard Greenstone Award for Diving Safety, the Our World-Underwater Award, Beneath the Sea’s Diver of the Year, the Wyland Foundation Award for Lifetime Achievement and the 2012 DEMA Reaching Out Award.

 

Addario, Captain Dominic

A USCG Master Mariner, undersea explorer, and principle investigator of the Jupiter Shipwreck site, Captain Dom has spent over two decades championing Private Sector Involvement in Helping to Keep the Age of Discovery Alive, sport divers and the “average joe” involved with the process of undersea exploration. He has been featured on the Discovery Channel, designated a member on the Mares Advisory Team, recognized by the Rolex Awards, in the “Spirit of Enterprise” and featured in countless national and international publications.

Ferris, Donald

Over the past twenty-five years, Don has trained more than 2000 divers. In the process, Don has literally written the book on scuba diving on Cape Cod. “Exploring The Waters of Cape Cod’, “Beneath the Waters of Massachusetts Bay”, and his newest volume, published in 2010, “Cape Cod’s Anthology of Shipwrecks.”

McKenna, Larry

Larry is a former United States Air Force aviator having served 26 years in flying and designing new aircraft before moving into International banking and real estate developer. He is now a dedicated environmentalist to save the Leatherback Sea Turtle from its spiraling progress into oblivion. Larry is currently involved with conservation efforts to save the Pacific Leatherback turtles from a rapid extinction.

Wells, Greg

Greg Wells coordinates public outreach and organizing for Pew Environment Group’s fisheries campaign efforts in New England. He has a master’s degree in marine conservation from the University of California, San Diego.

David is President and owner of Valeo Films, Inc, an independent film and video production company. He is also a large animal behaviorist, technical diver, and underwater expedition cameraman. His passion for work and his continued outstanding performance as a cameraman, writer, director and producer have earned him the respect of his colleagues as well as the industry at large. His fundamental mission is to highlight the plight sharks and to offer solutions toward their protection and conservation.

Fisher, Bill

Joe Romeiro and Bill Fisher founded 333 Productions in 2007. Since then, they have created four award-winning films, “Silent Requiem”, “Death of a Deity”, “A Lateral Line” and “Shark Culture”. The mission: to protect sharks by educating and dispelling the myths surrounding them through film and personal interaction. Their work has been featured on Discovery Networks, National Geographic, and various other T.V. productions. Joe Romeiro is a member of the Explorers Club, and Ocean Artists Society.
