Project Baseline Across The Mediterranean

Project Baseline is an initiative by Global Underwater Explorers to explore and document our most important environmental and cultural assets. During 2014, GUE was able to assemble a list of sponsors to support a broad-based expedition starting in the Bahamas and traveling through Florida to Azores, Portugal, France, Spain and then traversing through the Mediterranean. A wide range of science was conducted including local researchers within each region. Studies involved genetic modeling of coral species as well as a general assessment of environmental health. Project Baseline shifted toward wreck documentation through the Mediterranean, diving numerous historically significant WW2 wrecks. The final expedition weeks involved detailed study, 3d photogrammetry and recovery of ancient artifacts from 200 – 300 BC. One particularly exciting discovery was a 2,000+ year old sacrificial alter used for animal sacrifice and intended to solicit the good favor of the Gods.
