Tourists flock to the savannas of Kenya, where the conservation and preservation of rhinos, elephants, and lions, along with witnessing the spectacular wildebeest migration dominate our vision of East Africa. However, Watamu, on the coast of Kenya, is the home of East Africa’s first Marine National Park. Learn how local businesses, woman’s groups, artists, and non-profits have partnered to create a novel model of community conservation. Working together, they are building an economic mechanism that reinforces community supported conservation of marine mammals, sea turtles, coastal mangroves, and sustains a community organized recycling program that removes marine debris from local beaches.
