Enemy on the Homefront: Bell Island Wrecks, Newfoundland

In 1942, as World War II raged in Europe and the Pacific, Bell Island, Newfoundland seemed safe from the U-Boat menace that was plaguing shipping throughout the North Atlantic. Unfortunately, as summer turned to fall that sense of security was shattered when U-513 and U-518 slipped into Conception Bay and sent 4 ships to the bottom. Fortunately, these were the last war time tragedies in Conception Bay but these four ships, and the brave sailors that lost their lives that fall have not been forgotten.
