2007 Daytime Speakers Print E-mail

The Boston Sea Rovers are the proud sponsors of the “Longest Continuously Running Dive Show in the World,” a distinction made possible primarily due to the excellent quality of speakers that have continued to grace our stages. We take great pleasure in hosting the best educators, explorers, scientists, divers and speakers in the world. The purpose of these lectures help us to achieve our club our mission, “To educate the general public about the underwater world.”

Our daytime presentations form the backbone of our show. In two days we will host over 40 speakers covering a myriad of diving and marine related topics. Each hour there are three simultaneous lectures being held on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5 pm. You get to choose which speaker or topic you would like to see based on your interests.

Deep Shipwrecks of Halifax, Nova Scotia

Abstract: Part of an ongoing project diving the deep wrecks off Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, three expeditions have yielded an extensive video catalogue of wrecks not typically visited due to their depth. The highlight of these explorations came in 2003 when we were the first divers to find and film the wreck of the molasses tanker "Athelviking", sunk by the U1232, sitting upright and intact in 310'. Other wrecks featured are "British Freedom" "Kolkhoznik", Kaaparen, and the Submarine L26.

Diving in the Dark: Explorations in Underwater Flourescence

Abstract: Many corals and other marine organisms fluoresce with spectacular displays of vivid color. Besides being beautiful to look at, the fluorescence is proving useful to marine scientists and the fluorescent pigments are of tremendous value for biotechnology. This presentation is an overview of the nature of underwater fluorescence; techniques to see and photograph it; the wide variety of animals that fluoresce; the value of pigments for laboratory research; and how fluorescence is helping underwater researchers study coral reefs.

Diving the Mark 12 Diving System for the USN

Abstract: The Mark 12 diving system was a revolutionary change in Navy surface-supplied diving from the venerable copper Mark V helmet. Despite the improvements, it was in active use in the fleet for only a few years before being replaced by the Superlite style Mark 21. Return to an earlier era as we explore the Navy’s ‘orphaned’ dive system.
